Pidgin to Da Max edition by Douglass Simonson Ken Sakata Pat Sasaki Douglass Simonson Reference eBooks

The popular local Hawaii book classic and favorite pidgin dictionary is now available as an eBook. After its first publication 35 years ago, the witty Pidgin definitions and descriptions, combined with humorous illustrations still widely entertain locals and island visitors.
With the definitions of most of the words and phrases given in Pidgin, the book is intended to be a humorous introspective for Hawaii's locals about the language they speak on a day-to-day basis.
"Pidgin To Da Max" is an amusingly cartoon illustrated dictionary of Pidgin English. The book has been referenced as the "one" Hawaii book "every" local must own.
As an example of an entry for which the dictionary may be of little help to those unfamiliar with Pidgin, consider the definition of the word da kine
DA KINE (da KINE) Da kine is the keystone of pidgin. You can use it anywhere, anytime, anyhow. Very convenient. What would we do without DA KINE? "Ey, I no can da kine if you no like da kine, too!"

Pidgin to Da Max edition by Douglass Simonson Ken Sakata Pat Sasaki Douglass Simonson Reference eBooks Reviews
I'm from Hawaii and I admit that I find this entertaining! Gifted this a family member visiting from the mainland and they to get a kick out of reading this. Great purchase!
I had it sent to another scholar to introduce her to some features of Pidgin. She found it useful.
Terrific book. Recommend for anyone trying to learn pidgin.
I think pidgin is one of those cultural touchstones by which people with common backgrounds recognize each other and the rest of us should just butt out. At least not try to use more than a word or two with the locals. But, if you're going to spend time here, why not take the opportunity to gain some insight on the experience of growing up in Hawaii? It's a real chopsuey of ethnicities and all must endure some ribbing. The reader must as well; many definitions use other pidgin words. Makai is defined as the opposite mauka and vice-versa. If you can't figure it out, there's always the internet.
Cartooning is an underrated art form IMHO and these are among the best. They capture facial expressions wonderfully and each is worth a thousand words of text as they say.
I would give 5 stars for the book and one star for the version. On the at least half of the cartoons appear with the top 10% or so duplicated and the bottom 10% missing. Some are only partly visible. The image resolution could be better. Some of the text cannot be seen at all and many pages are completely blank. Some text gets wrapped leaving a single character on a line. It's better in Landscape mode, but still bad. Fortunately, you can bring it up in the Cloud Reader on a PC to see what you're missing. Hyperlinks would be great in a book like this, but there are none. I'm sure there is a conflict between adapting content to a new medium () and preserving the look of the original print version but I think too little effort was spent on it here.
But, if you like to laugh, like to learn, and are interested in Hawaii, this book is an essential classic.
I'm from Hawaii so it's always fun to read and speak pidgin English.
This is what the visitors hear when locals are speaking to each other. This is "good fun"to read and the illustrations are great.
This is great fun! It is more designed for people who have had some exposure to Hawaiian pidgin in the past, rather than people who have never heard of pidgin. That said, it is well constructed and has great illustrations.
This digital version is not like the printed copy. It lacks the side views the printed copy has. I will not recommend this apprised to the printed copy.
